The Tyrone Police Department is seeking non-certified individuals with integrity, character, and a sense of duty to join us in one of the most noble and necessary professions in the nation.

The perfect candidate is highly self motivated, driven by a passion to put others before themselves, and ready to work hard to earn the title "law enforcement officer" through basic mandate and field training.

​Minimum Requirements for Consideration
  • Must be 21 years of age by basic mandate graduation date;
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalency. A degree from an accredited college or university is preferred;
  • Must have a valid Georgia driver's license and a clean MVR;
  • Must have a clean criminal history; and
  • If prior military, any discharges must be honorable.

Hiring Process:
  • Comprehensive background investigation;
  • Oral interview board;
  • Physical agility assessment;
  • Interview with the Chief of Police;
  • State academy entrance exam (fee paid by the applicant);
  • POST application process;
  • Polygraph;
  • Medical exam and drug screen; and 
  • Psychological evaluation.

Once hired, the candidate must successfully pass basic mandate training as well as our field training program.

Equipment:

You've got to have the right equipment to stay safe and do your job properly and we do our best to provide our officers with everything they need. Assigned equipment includes:


  • Take home cars*;
  • Soft Body Armor;
  • Active Shooter Kits (hard body armor and ballistic helmets);
  • Tourniquets; 
  • Glock 22 sidearms with tac lights;
  • Tasers*;
  • Shotgun;
  • AR-15 Patrol Rifle with optics and tac light*;
  • Flashlights;
  • Laptops; and
  • Body cameras.

Training:
  • Basic Mandate: candidates will be sent to, and must pass, Georgia's 408 hour basic mandate training course (in Forsyth or Columbus);
  • Field Training: upon earning basic mandate, the candidate will complete an additional 360+ hours of on the job training with our trained and experienced FTOs.
  • We currently employ four officers with instructor certifications who ensure that our staff receives quality on-going in-service training on an on-going basis.
  • Taser: all patrol officers will receive the training necessary to become Taser certified.
  • Crisis Intervention Training (CIT): all employees of the Tyrone Police Department are required to become CIT certified.  
  • We own a state of the art use of force simulator that allows us to provide our officers with interactive video-based UOF training that incorporates every weapon issued.

*Take home cars are issued upon graduation from field training. All other marked equipment is issued once training/certification standards are met.
